What’s Good Y'all!!! I’m really excited about this next review! I hadn’t realized how long it’s been since we had a mainstream black girl group. For me, black girl groups have never gone away, I still listen to SWV, even their new material. I still play TLC’s Fanmail as if it came out yesterday and Everytime I level up I always play ‘So Good' by Destiny's Child. The aesthetic of a girl group, while hard to maintain, can be a beautiful ensemble if all the right pieces are in place and while I haven’t done a deep dive in the creation of Flo, their first project really seems like they got the formula right!
Access All Areas (AAA) begins beautifully with Cynthia Erivo introducing Jorja. Renée and Stella as the talented ladies of FLO. While I love Cynthia’s voice, it would have been so fire to have had someone from another black girl group pass the torch.
The album is amazing! I am excited for this generation to have a girl group. For me, R&B girl groups were the ultimate example of girl power, and this album exudes just that. With songs like 'In My Bag' featuring GloRilla and 'I’m Just A Girl' (And I know this review is about FLOw, but I just want to take minute and give GLO her props on this feature, she is truly THAT GIRL and I wanna declare 2025 the year of BIG GLO!). Of course you also have your typical songs dealing with relationships and being in love such as 'Walk Like This' and 'Bending My Rules'. Then you have the song 'How Does It Feel' that gives off strong Kehlani energy. This album plays very well on pulling on inspiration from past and present artists, it was like a nice trip down memory lane with new material.
GloRilla and Cynthia Erivo are the only features on this debut album, which I appreciate because I enjoy hearing more from the artist on first projects. Looking through the credits for the album, it was cool to see some recognizable names that had their hand in this beautiful debut; such as, Jay Versace, Tayla Parx and MNEK.
This is a great solid first project and I can’t wait to see how this group evolves. The way these ladies flow sonically it's so refreshing and exciting. Please be sure to check out the new album via the links below:
