What’s good y'all?
It took me a minute to figure out how to write this review, because at first I was not feeling 'While We Wait 2'. It took a couple listens for me to love it and that was also how I felt about their last album ‘Crash.’ It’s not that they aren’t good albums because I honestly want to stop labeling music as to whether it’s trash or not.
The reality is, this new sound and direction Kehlani has taken musically just had to grow on me. Kehlani has been doing their thing for a minute now this is their 8th studio album. The original ‘While We Wait’, released in 2019, came out during the very beginning of my healing journey so a lot of the songs on that album I felt in spirit, for instance, ‘Footsteps’ ft Musiq Soulchild and ‘Morning Glory'.
As I kept listening to ‘While We Wait 2’, I realized first and foremost this album has 14 songs, 5 more songs than was necessary lol. ‘While We Wait’ was just 9 tracks, not that I’m complaining about new music or long albums but I thought the purpose of the aesthetic of the album was for us to have a few more bops but not too many. Songs like ‘When He’s Not There’ ft. Lucky Daye and ‘Clothes Off’ feat Kwn seemed better suited for the ‘Crash’ album. I also did not think this album needed remixes to ‘8’ feat Flo and ‘After Hours’ ft. Ludmilla. Don’t get me wrong I love all of these songs, I mentioned they are definitely bops and I love the highlight of featured artists that we may or may not know, I just feel like these songs were better suited on ‘Crash’ than this album.
When I think of ‘While We Wait’ I think of Self love, learning your boundaries, learning your worth, gaining a sense of self and then obtaining that in someone else. So let me tell y'all some of my favorite bops on this new album that made me reminiscent of the original. ‘S.I.N.G.L.E’ takes me back to the first time I heard ‘Sittin’ up in my room’ by Brandy and for that reason I love it so much, it's a cute singlehood anthem that transitions smoothly into ‘Know Better’ ft. Lil' Mo and Vince Staples. Sampling the iconic '4Eva' by Lil' Mo ft. Fabolous, Vince adds a dope Cali vibe to the song, and adding Lil’ Mo on the track…genius! ‘Border’ is a beautiful love ballad that reminds me as to why I’m a Kehlani fan to begin with. 'Form of You' ft. Destin Conrad and CHILDOFNINES is my favorite song on the album, it's so beautifully written and composed like love poem, I can listen to it on repeat over
This isn’t my first time writing about Kehlani and I’m sure this won’t be my last. Make sure you check out my previous article as well before y'all check out the new music, links below:
